Capitale della Cambogia ( 2 milioni di abitanti ) è attraversata dal fiume Mekong. La sua architettura risente sia dello stile tradizionale khmer sia di quello ereditato durante la colonizzazione francese. Nel 1975 i Khmer rossi, con a capo Pol Pot, occuparono la città e costrinsero Lon Nol alla fuga. I Khmer rossi misero in atto una politica di “socialismo agrario”, evacuando tutti i cittadini dalle città alle campagne in fattorie comuni e sterminando senza pietà ogni oppositore del regime. Phnom Penh venne trasformata in una città fantasma. Nel Natale del 1978 duecentomila vietnamiti invasero la Cambogia, conquistarono Phnom Penh e cacciarono Pol Pot con i suoi fedelissimi nelle foreste al confine con la Thailandia.
Museo del Genocidio:
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum è la casa di torture più nota del regime dei Khmer Rossi, che ha causato la morte di 1,7 milioni di persone dal 1975 al 1979, un terzo della popolazione cambogiana. Alcune stanze del museo sono oggi tappezzate, dal pavimento al soffitto, con le foto in bianco e nero di alcuni dei circa 20.000 internati che hanno popolato la prigione. Nel 2009 l’UNESCO ha inserito il museo nell’Elenco delle Memorie del mondo.
Ex liceo di Phnom Penh, Tuol Sleng venne trasformato in campo di concentramento col nome di s-21 dove venivano interrogati, torturati e infine portati al campo di sterminio di Choeung Ek, ad una quindicina di chilometri da Phnom Penh. Lì venivano uccisi con sbarre di ferro, picconi, machete e molte altre armi.
