“Enrico Cuccia è stato certamente uno dei maggiori protagonisti della vita economica italiana della seconda metà del Novecento”: inizia così il ritratto che ne fa Giorgio La Malfa, il quale ha avuto modo di lavorare con lui a Mediobanca e di conoscerlo da vicino. Quando si parla di Cuccia non si può però non parlare anche della sua creatura, Mediobanca appunto, un istituto di credito specializzato nei finanziamenti a medio termine nato nel 1946 dalle tre Banche di interesse nazionale (Banca Commerciale Italiana, Credito Italiano e Banco di Roma), di cui egli fu direttore generale sin dal principio e dove rimase fino agli anni novanta con la carica di presidente onorario. Ma per capire il pensiero e la personalità di Cuccia occorre risalire a prima, come fa La Malfa, agli anni di formazione, ai suoi soggiorni all’estero, a Parigi e Londra, alle esperienze fatte all’Iri e alla Comit. Del periodo di Mediobanca vengono poi qui presi in considerazione alcuni episodi e momenti salienti, quali sono stati lo scontro con l’Iri di Romano Prodi riguardo alla privatizzazione della banca, l’affaire Sindona con le minacce rivolte contro Cuccia e Giorgio Ambrosoli, il rapporto ambivalente con Raffaele Mattioli. Si evidenziano così le idee fondamentali e i principi su cui Cuccia ha via via costruito il lavoro di Mediobanca, come la distinzione tra banche di investimento e banche commerciali, l’importanza del credito industriale, la necessità dell’indipendenza dell’istituto…
