Le seguenti riflessioni non perseguono il modesto scopo di proporre il mio pensiero nella celata speranza che esso possa colmare dei “vuoti”, ma hanno la ben più ampia aspettativa di stimolare il lettore a pensare da sé anche al fine di assicurarsi il piacere di stare in buona compagnia con se stesso e sfuggire alla solitudine.
I PENSATORI. Il mondo di oggi non brilla per numero di veri pensatori e l’intelletto spesso si disperde nei rigagnoli del pressapochismo. Emerge sovente una classe dirigente pubblica e privata più dedita al comando che alla gestione e che persegue il fine dell’altrui obbedienza e non quello della condivisione. L’interesse di pochi sovrasta quello di molti, le differenze si accentuano, il rifiuto di ridurre le brutali disuguaglianze ha come conseguenza che la miseria è sempre più direttamente proporzionale alla ricchezza, l’arroganza e il disprezzo classista caratterizzano il comportamento di molti. Inoltre sono tuttora presenti moderne forme di schiavitù per le quali i padroni continuano a ignorare il loro debito nei confronti degli asserviti. La questione razziale è ancora irrisolta e il presente elenco accresce asintoticamente il numero degli elementi che lo compongono tanto da doverlo considerare costantemente incompleto. Nel perdurare di questa situazione, più che mai attuale è l’invettiva pronunciata nel Senato di Roma da Cicerone contro Catilina l’8 novembre del 63 A.C. (Quo usque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra?).
La contestazione legale non sortisce effetti significativi e quella illegale non è auspicabile, l’unica aspettativa è riposta nell’attesa che si manifestino i cosiddetti “cicli vichiani” sull’alternanza di eventi ripetitivi e sperare che l’attuale oscurantismo ceda il passo ad un desiderato illuminismo. La storia ci insegna che Giovan Battista Vico, pur non avendo indicato tempi e durate di dette alternanze, aveva ragione.
LO STATO. Ovunque nel mondo la struttura della Pubblica Organizzazione Statale è costituita da coloro che, con ruoli diversi, comandano, gestiscono, contestano e subiscono. Il tipo di assetto istituzionale delle prime tre categorie qualifica la suindicata struttura come dittatura o democrazia. In questo mondo dove troppo spesso non solo la giustizia, ma anche l’ingiustizia non sono uguali per tutti, la quarta categoria sopra indicata non è di norma presa in alcuna considerazione.
LA TOLLERANZA. Intesa comunemente come accettazione delle diversità, la tolleranza è una qualità non sufficientemente diffusa poiché è sovente sovrastata anche dall’arroganza e dall’insolenza. Tanti e variegati sono gli oggetti della tolleranza tra i quali emerge la difformità delle idee che molti valutano, perché proprie, le migliori in assoluto al pari di coloro che nel corso dei secoli ancora ritengono il loro Dio superiore a qualunque altro. Una rachitica accettazione delle diversità o, peggio, il loro rifiuto, è in buona misura dovuta oltre che alla “fragilità” di carattere a uno scarso grado di civiltà, istruzione e rispetto per gli altri e mal celano un inconsapevole disprezzo per se stessi paradossalmente convinti di essere sempre dalla parte di un’unica ragione.
I limiti della tolleranza variano in funzione dell’oggetto di riferimento. Non sono tollerabili le diversità rappresentate dalla malvagità, corruzione, terrorismo, pedofilia, femminicidio, violenza di genere, razzismo, illegalità e simili manifestazioni che, purtroppo, sono assai diffuse e che andrebbero condannate e punite severamente senza alcuna concessione di attenuanti. Un ricorso molto frequente alla tolleranza è quello cui si è costretti quando ci s’imbatte con l’altrui maleducazione o, più in generale, con le innumerevoli “bad manners”. La buona educazione non è più “di moda” e tutti i Galatei, compreso il primo scritto da Monsignor Giovanni Della Casa, andrebbero intitolati “Prediche inutili per maleducati e sordi congeniti”. E’ anche per questi motivi che emerge una ragione in più per comportarsi, almeno per se stessi, da “old fashion gentleman” anche a costo di suscitare ironie e sarcasmi, perché se il rispetto per gli altri può non essere apprezzato, è sempre auto gratificante quello per custodito per se stessi. La differenza tra un “signore” e un “cafone” risiede altresì nel fatto che il primo ha il dovere di restare tale anche nelle occasioni in cui potrebbe essere tentato di non esserlo. Sovente arroganti discendenti di una famiglia patrizia ritengono di essere, conseguentemente, titolari di “ereditata signorilità”. A fronte di tale falso convincimento replico che blasonati si nasce per puro caso, ma signori si diventa per costante determinazione. In vero, coloro che accettano il confronto con le diversità, escluse quelle già indicate come “intollerabili”, arricchiscono il proprio bagaglio culturale perché il riscontro con “l’altro” sortisce una delle due seguenti alternative entrambe positive; infatti, o se ne trae conferma della bontà delle proprie idee o si coglie la preziosa opportunità di rettificare ed ampliare le stesse sotto i riflettori di una “nuova luce”. Giova osservare che, a mio sommesso avviso, il grado di tolleranza è inversamente proporzionale a quello della propria fiacchezza intellettuale e culturale. E’ verosimile che le suddette affermazioni non trovino un unanime consenso, ma non essendomi ancora imbattuto con un pensatore che riesca a convincermi del contrario, non mi resta che laconicamente prendere atto che “tal dei tempi è il costume”.
LEALTA’ E FEDELTA’. Non sono sinonimi anche se, per alcuni tratti comuni, sono da molti considerati tali. La lealtà è una significativa componente del nostro carattere e delle nostre modalità comportamentali tanto che coloro che ne sono dotati obbediscono ai propri valori di moralità e correttezza anche nelle occasioni di notevole difficoltà durante le quali potrebbe sembrare più conveniente essere sleali. La lealtà è commisurata al grado di coerente interconnessione tra la propria condotta e i citati valori che nel tempo si sono interiorizzati. Secondo Platone “solo l’uomo giusto può essere leale” e ancora giova ricordare la puntuale esplicitazione di John Ladd, professore di filosofia presso la Brown University, secondo cui la lealtà è, in ogni sistema pubblico o privato che sia, un ingrediente essenziale della morale civile e umana. La lealtà dovrebbe sempre caratterizzare, tra gli altri, la politica ed anche il mondo del lavoro nel quale è auspicabile un comportamento corretto nei confronti di coloro ai quali si rende la propria prestazione professionale, verso i superiori, i colleghi e i subordinati senza mai escludere la lealtà verso se stessi con la conseguente esigenza di tenere anche conto delle proprie aspettative, speranze, desideri e lecite ambizioni. Il dovere coniugare la lealtà verso gli altri con quella per se stessi può generare una difficile situazione denominata “conflitto di lealtà” in parte risolvibile con l’uso della ragione e la capacità di cercare la migliore conciliazione tra diverse esigenze spesso tra loro contrastanti. Giova osservare che in assenza del citato conflitto è più corretto riferirsi alla fedeltà per la quale i comportamenti assunti sono avallati da sentimenti che sovente sono sostenuti dai dogmi ai quali ci si riferisce senza alcuna mediazione scaturente dall’uso della ragione e dell’intelligenza. In sintesi “avere fede” significa credere ciecamente in qualcosa che non si è in grado di provare ragionevolmente. La fedeltà soddisfa prevalentemente un soggettivo bisogno ed è un sentimento che sta alla base di tutte le religioni. Essa trae origine dall’imprescindibile necessità di ritenersi indelebilmente legati al rispetto delle promesse e dei patti anche in materia contrattuale e non reclama consensi, approvazioni e ricompense. Conseguentemente la fedeltà è una virtù che ci vincola moralmente nei confronti di coloro sui quali, di norma, riponiamo la nostra rassicurante fiducia ancorché questo sentimento potrebbe non essere sempre essenziale per essere fedeli. La forma più diffusa di fedeltà è quella destinata al proprio Dio al quale ci si rivolge senza la necessità di un totale o parziale riscontro razionale dei dogmi ma sostenuti da un sentimento nel quale, in notevole misura, convergono amore e speranza che costituiscono le fondamenta di tutte le religioni le quali promettono una migliore continuità della vita terrena alla quale credere per fede. Anche in questo caso scoppia l’irrisolvibile conflitto tra “ragione e sentimento” e più specificatamente tra “atei e credenti”. Un’indiretta e parziale chiarificazione dei sentimenti sopra indicati può, a mio sommesso avviso, cogliersi dal seguente suggerimento: Siate fedeli ai componenti della vostra famiglia, alla Patria e al Dio a cui credete e siate leali verso tutti i restanti e voi stessi.
L’UNITA’ NAZIONALE. Sin dalla sua, nei fatti, parzialmente fallita costituzione, l’Italia è stata considerata un’entità che, ben lungi dal costituire un “sistema coordinato”, mescola disuguaglianze territoriali, sociali, politiche ed economiche ottenendo il medesimo risultato di chi tenta di miscelare l’olio con l’acqua. A conferma di quest’affermazione è sufficiente sottolineare come esempio, che si aggiunge a tanti altri, il risultato della violenta campagna elettorale conclusasi con l’esito del 4 Marzo 2018 caratterizzato dal fatto che l’elettorato ha diviso l’Italia in due diversi schieramenti, coalizione di “destra” e movimento “5 stelle”, entrambi vincitori delle elezioni per il rinnovo del Parlamento. La classe politica di un tempo costituita dai De Gasperi, Malagodi, Almirante e Togliatti (per citarne solo alcuni) conseguì risultati lusinghieri (ottimi se confrontati con quelli ottenuti dai loro successori), ma non tali da ridurre il persistente “gap” tra il Nord e il Sud della penisola che si distinguono anche per “differenze antropologiche”. In occasione dei miei frequenti soggiorni milanesi ho più volte, con disappunto, assistito alla seguente scena: due lombardi di ceto molto modesto s’insultavano vicendevolmente, tra il serio e il faceto, dandosi del “terrone”, di contro sono compiaciuto per non avere mai visto un meridionale, del medesimo livello sociale, dare del “polentone” a un suo conterraneo. I due fatti possono essere giudicati insignificanti e banali, ma forse un più acuto critico avrà validi motivi per proporne una sua diversa valutazione. La datata istituzione delle Regioni e il successivo federalismo, pur costituendo iniziative teoricamente apprezzabili, hanno in sostanza accentuato le differenze perché non solo non hanno rigenerato il logorato rapporto tra istituzioni e cittadini, ma hanno solo ben realizzato una crescita di potere e conseguente corruzione grazie anche alle migliaia di cariche elettive che si sono aggiunte a quelle, già fin troppo numerose, preesistenti. Tutto quanto sopra evidenziato non poteva non ripercuotersi anche sull’economia nazionale; una delle tante inchieste condotte da Il Sole 24 Ore ha rilevato che l’industria manifatturiera prospera al Nord anche a livello internazionale, mentre al Sud essa cerca di sopravvivere sotto il peso di un’ossessiva burocrazia, di una mafia sempre più invadente, di una dilagante corruzione e di un’ingiusta fiscalità statale e locale. Non sono certamente confortanti le dichiarazioni di chi afferma che in molti casi la Grecia, cui dobbiamo essere grati per non essere “ultimi” in Europa, sta peggio di noi, infatti, non è consolatorio che anche per questa fattispecie si goda di quella che io definisco la “soddisfazione per essere stati sorpassati in retromarcia”. Il sogno dei benefici di cui i siciliani avrebbero dovuto esultare grazie all’autonomia regionale è miseramente fallito e con esso quello di un federalismo costruito su fragili plinti di fondazione in materia amministrativa e fiscale. Le scelte di politica economica, in aggiunta alle non poche colpe del popolo, hanno perseguito finalità molto diverse da quelle che avrebbero dovuto e potuto conseguire. I flussi di denaro erogati alle Regioni del Sud hanno consentito al potere centrale di “mettersi a posto con la propria coscienza” (?), ma nessun serio e doveroso controllo è stato mai fatto, e così buona parte di detto denaro è ritornata al mittente per il tramite del più efficiente dei suoi corrieri, la mafia. Il resto del denaro non è servito per migliorare i servizi, ma a tamponare le falle di una finanza pubblica locale più vorace dell’aquila che dilania il fegato di Prometeo. A questa e ad altre considerazioni sulla “qualità” della classe politica si può obiettare che i politici non sono tutti incapaci e corrotti e ripetere la solita raccomandazione che “non bisogna fare di tutta l’erba un fascio”. Pur tuttavia, è utile precisare che la responsabilità penale è la sola a essere soggettiva a differenza di quella politica che è collettiva; di conseguenza i politici competenti e onesti, se pur ce ne sono, sono comunque “tutti” coinvolti nella suindicata responsabilità. La riforma del fisco e la questione meridionale sono ancora soltanto “ buone intenzioni sbandierate ai soli fini elettorali”, a esse volutamente non si è data alcuna seria soluzione anche perché coloro che dovrebbero provvedervi sono troppo impegnati a tutelare i vari interessi personali e i privilegi della casta di appartenenza. A tale proposito, è opportuno precisare che ciò che i comuni cittadini chiamano “spreco” è per molti politici “investimento”. Giova osservare però che nulla è più noioso e inutile di un “secolare lamento” al quale sono dedite numerose parti della popolazione del Mezzogiorno più disposte al subire che al fare e a poco vale la scusante che il Sud è stato penalizzato dalla dominazione di Greci, Arabi, Spagnoli e altri non troppo antropologicamente diversi dai precedenti, mentre il Nord ha beneficiato di quella Austroungarica. Inoltre, sarebbe ingiusto attribuire tutte le colpe dell’attuale situazione politica ed economica alle sole classi politiche (elette anche dagli stessi lamentosi meridionalisti) secondo la ben collaudata tecnica dello “scarica barile” che conduce alla conclusione che la colpa è sempre di un altro preferibilmente scelto tra gli assenti; ma è pur vero che un Mezzogiorno abbandonato frena anche lo sviluppo del Nord e ciò dovrebbe fare ben sperare per una “inversione di rotta”. Nell’attesa che questo miracolo si avveri i popoli del Sud non dovrebbero più considerarsi sottoposti a un destino crudele avallato, secondo la nota visione di Giovanni Verga, da un immobilismo familiare, sociale ed economico al quale un fato impietoso li ha ineluttabilmente costretti sin dalla nascita, ma, forti delle proprie varie risorse, costruire una “riscossa” che parta dalla seguente premessa. Il Mezzogiorno di questa penisola potrà sperare di cambiare solo quando il cambiamento sarà autenticamente voluto e palesemente costruito dalla sua gente perché il “silenzio dei buoni” è sovente più dannoso delle “grida dei cattivi”. Se ciò avverrà, sarà un passo significativo verso la costituzione dell’Italia finalmente unita.
LA PATRIA. La Patria non sempre è la Nazione nella quale casualmente si nasce, ma il luogo dove legalità, solidarietà e speranze sono i pilastri sui quali gli “amici di uno Stato amico” possono liberamente costruire il loro futuro e forgiare il proprio destino. Fortunati sono coloro per i quali i due posti coincidono.
IL CONFINE E LA FRONTIERA. Il confine è il perimetro di un blocco omogeneo che mostra tutta l’insicurezza derivante dalla necessità di sentirsi protetti. La frontiera è un limite che racchiude una comune identità fondata sull’individualità personale e collettiva con riferimento a categorie aventi per oggetto l’etica, la morale, la cultura, la politica, l’economia e le tradizioni. Alla presenza di una crescente emigrazione raramente seguita da un’auspicabile integrazione sarebbe opportuno che tutti ci ponessimo, anche metaforicamente, la domanda se è più difficile superare gli ostacoli di un confine o quelli di una frontiera.
LE OPINIONI. Cambiare le proprie idee è legittimo perché solo un malinteso concetto di coerenza ci impone a considerarci perennemente vincolati ad un presunto obbligo di fedeltà ai convincimenti già esternati. Pur tuttavia, ogni sopravvenuto cambiamento delle nostre opinioni deve essere sempre avallato da una rigorosa analisi motivazionale senza della quale il “mutar d’avviso” è estemporaneo e inattendibile.
I DELITTI E LE PENE. La disputa tra coloro che sono a favore o contro la pena di morte è tra quelle definibili “senza soluzione di continuità”. Personalmente sono tendenzialmente propenso a schierarmi con i secondi, ma mi considero un fortunato per non essere stato mai chiamato a proporla per chi è colpevole “al di là di ogni ragionevole dubbio” perché, per esempio, colto in flagranza di reato. Devo confessare che in questi casi sarei perplesso se suggerire una pena ancora più pesante di una liberatoria morte e cioè un ergastolo non soggetto a futuri sconti di pena concessi in base a norme spesso costruite su un’eccessiva indulgenza e sull’assenza della certezza della pena. Oggi la condanna a morte è in alcuni Paesi comminata per gravissimi crimini quali omicidio e stragi e non più, come in un lontano passato, per lesa maestà, alto tradimento e simili. L’elenco di questi reati era altresì esteso alla stregoneria, all’eresia e alle idee e comportamenti contrastanti con i dogmi e i principi della Chiesa Cattolica. Per detti crimini gli spietati giudici dei tribunali della Santa (?) Inquisizione erano anche dediti a infliggere agli imputati torture finalizzate ad ottenere confessioni, vere o false, che giustificassero un verdetto di morte. Se mi dichiaro agnostico sul tema in argomento, non ho dubbi nell’affermarmi convinto oppositore di quella che definisco la “seconda pena di morte”. Mi riferisco ai casi, rari ma significativi, nei quali il giustiziato viene da morto esposto al pubblico disprezzo secondo una medievale consuetudine che, con deprecabile zelo, è stata ereditata da alcuni fanatici ignoranti che con assurda e crudele scelleratezza hanno esteso la pena di morte perfino a monumenti e siti archeologici patrimonio dell’umanità. Inoltre confermo questo mio convincimento anche nei non infrequenti casi nei quali il pubblico dispregio è fondato su ragioni umanamente condivisibili fino a giustificare pure un desiderio di vendetta ancorché tardivo. In Italia non esiste più la pena di morte, l’ultima fu eseguita in due diverse circostanze, la prima a Giulino, dove il 28/4/1945 furono fucilati “in nome del popolo italiano” alcuni gerarchi fascisti e, secondo una controversa versione dei fatti, Benito Mussolini e, volontariamente o casualmente, Claretta Petacci per la quale non ci sono storiche ragioni che possano giustificarne l’uccisione che, comunque, avvenne. Infatti, non sono ascrivibili all’amante di Mussolini colpe inerenti la persecuzione degli Ebrei Italiani, l’uccisione di molti partigiani e la funesta decisione di entrare in guerra al fianco di Hitler. Pur tuttavia nell’immaginario collettivo la Petacci era colpevole per il vincolo d’amore che la legava al Duce fino al punto di seguirlo consapevolmente pure alla morte. A tale proposito mi chiedo: anche l’amore, ancorché nutrito per una persona ritenuta indegna, è da considerarsi una colpa mortale? No, decisamente no; infatti, per esempio, nessuna pubblica accusa è stata mai sollevata contro la madre del pluriomicida e bandito siciliano Salvatore Giuliano che accompagnandone la bara singhiozzando ripeteva i seguenti non condivisibili aggettivi “Turiddu, figghiu mio santu e buono”. La seconda pena di morte, non ordinata ma tacitamente tollerata, fu inflitta, dopo la loro fucilazione, a sei gerarchi, a Mussolini e alla Petacci il 29/4/1945 a Milano in Piazzale Loreto. Quest’ultima, forse come risposta positiva alla mia precedente domanda, fu privata della biancheria intima che portava sotto la gonna e poi, insieme con gli altri, furono tutti ricondannati, da morti, all’impiccagione a testa in giù. Durante il periodo fascista e quando con la ”liberazione” esso cadde definitivamente, io ero appena un bimbo e quindi non ho esperienze dirette ma solo conoscenze dovute a ricerche e studi su quello che considero un deprecabile “ventennio”. Pur tuttavia sono convinto che una seconda pena di morte non debba essere inflitta in nessun caso poiché la stessa ha radici, motivazioni e scopi sicuramente peggiori di quelli che potrebbero anche giustificare la prima decretata per i viventi. La morte in sé merita rispetto, essa comporta la cessazione di ogni tipo di rapporto con chi è ancora in vita, resta solo, per chi ci crede, il definitivo giudizio di un Essere soprannaturale pietoso o vendicativo. Inoltre le civili legislazioni prevedono che non si può essere condannati due volte per il medesimo reato, secondo il brocardo, antica massima giuridica, il quale contiene il seguente principio del diritto che così recita: “Ne bis in idem”. Se detta norma è in vigore per i vivi, perché non sempre è valida anche per i morti?
L’ISTRUZIONE. Il “primo giorno di scuola” dovrebbe non prevederne l’ultimo poiché l’istruzione è un processo senza soluzione di continuità che si evolve durante l’intera vita di ogni individuo.
La voglia di studiare, scoprire, conoscere, imparare (rectius: interiorizzare) ed elevare il proprio livello culturale e intellettuale dovrebbe essere un “piacere” che ci gratifica per tutta la vita.
La conoscenza è senza limiti, essa non può essere per ciascuno di noi compiutamente acquisita, ma ogni tappa di un nuovo apprendimento dovrebbe essere lo stimolo per tentare di raggiungere un successivo traguardo. Lo studio è simile a un cibo che paradossalmente non lenisce la fame, ma la aumenta. Inoltre non è baloccandosi che s’impara, lo studio è propedeutico alla gioia dell’apprendere e alla sofferenza della continua scoperta di quanto vasto è il nostro non-sapere. Non sono certo invidiabili, ma forse beati, i tuttologi confortati dalle loro arroganti certezze e coloro che vivono nell’oscurità dell’ignoranza (uno dei pilastri della felicità dei poveri di spirito) mai tormentati dal dubbio e serenamente confinati in un tranquillo alveo che, in materia di studio, non conosce sacrifici, confronti e le inevitabili sconfitte inflitte a quanti siamo ininterrottamente iscritti alla “scuola di color che sanno meno di quanto vorrebbero”. A tale proposito mi sovvengono le sagge parole del mio Maestro che, includendomi generosamente nella seguente categoria, soleva dirmi: “Noi intellettuali paghiamo sempre di persona”. E’ anche sulla scia di quest’osservazione che, al fine di incrementare e nobilitare il proprio grado d’istruzione, ritengo sia necessario avere un’intelligente strategia di studio, una costante sete di sapere e la volontà di spingere le proprie conoscenze verso i loro estremi limiti. A conferma delle superiori considerazioni giova ricordare quanto disse Marco Tullio Cicerone: “Ci sono più uomini resi nobili dallo studio di quanto non lo siano dalla natura”.
LA CULTURA E L’INTELLIGENZA. La cultura (dal latino colere “coltivare”) è un “insieme” di saperi, credenze, costumi, opinioni e comportamenti che caratterizzano soggettivamente e collettivamente un determinato gruppo di persone anche in funzione della loro eredità storica. La suindicata concezione è tra le altre (sociologica, tecnologica, pedagogica, etc.) quella antropologica che, a mio parere, più compiutamente definisce detto sostantivo. L’intelligenza (dal latino intelligere “capire”), non ancora universalmente definita probabilmente a causa delle sue svariate forme, può essere identificata, almeno per il genere umano, come un “insieme” di abilità soggettive psichiche e mentali che consentono di meglio tentare di giungere alla “corretta conoscenza” tramite l’uso della ragione. In senso più ampio, l’intelligenza è una “proprietà cognitiva” direttamente proporzionale alla soggettiva capacità di “adattare i propri pensieri e comportamenti all’ambiente circostante” al fine di “fronteggiare e provare a risolvere con successo nuove situazioni”. Le suindicate incomplete definizioni mostrano che cultura e intelligenza non sono sinonimi e tanto meno la prima coincide con la seconda; la più sintetica differenza tra i due “insiemi” evidenzia che la cultura si fonda sul “sapere” mentre l’intelligenza sul “ragionato buon senso”. Purtroppo è diffuso l’errore di considerare una persona colta anche intelligente dimenticando il detto popolare che qualifica molti contadini “scarpe rotte (poca cultura) e cervello fino (molta intelligenza)”. Detto errore assume valori esponenziali se una persona colta si considera, conseguentemente, intelligente. Giova osservare che le suindicate qualità non sono mai totalmente presenti o assenti; infatti, nessuno di noi è compiutamente colto (anche se in un solo campo del sapere) o totalmente idiota (salvo che per gravi patologie). Secondo una parziale verità, colti si diventa e intelligenti si nasce.
